At least 1.3 million of our older adults residing in nursing homes face the greatest barriers to accessing dental care and suffer in silence as their oral health and dental needs are being neglected. In addition, most of our veterans have no dental coverage and are not receiving any dental treatment at Veterans Administration hospitals. Oral Disability Rescue, is a not-for-profit 501C3 organization, (EIN: 37-1668463, State Reference ID: 03382129, established May 16, 2011) created with the main goal of preventing oral diseases and treating the orally disabled and/or handicapped older adults, veterans and those below the “poverty threshold” set by the U.S. government. The organization is composed of a group of volunteer dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and hundreds of thoughtful American citizens that as an advocacy group can help provide proper oral care for our neglected older adults and veterans. Unfortunately, oral diseases are underestimated, ignored, or not detected until far too late, resulting in increased morbidity and/or mortality. Several studies have reported that poor oral hygiene, inadequate denture stabilization, and many other dental/oral problems could result in serious life-threatening medical problems such as oral cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory infections, diabetic complications, malnutrition, depression, and dementia.
